The Class of 1990 held a Reunion during the weekend of July 4th, 1997. Sherisse Smelser organized the event, and it was a smashing success. On the night of Friday the 4th, the group gathered at the Dukes fireworks game, visited, and got reacquainted. The alums brought photos of themselves, their families, projects at work, and hobbies which were made into a display during the picnic the following day. On Saturday, July 5th, the day started with a picnic under the pine trees
north of Zimmerman Library near the duck pond. Sub sandwiches, chips,
watermelon chunks, soda, and water were served. Larry Luna (Dec. 1990), a
Sandia employee, arranged for 5 tables and 30 chairs from his church.
After everyone had eaten their fill, out came the water guns, both those
designed and built by UNM engineers and those store-bought. Of course, those
specially built by our alums were far superior.
Everyone got drenched in the
ensuing testing period as shown in the photo. Chris Grotbeck (at left) and Tim
Johnson team up against Larry Luna, while Larry's daughter Lisa watches in the
background.
Chris Grotbeck (Dec. 1990), now working at Intel in Albuquerque, won the
competition with an archery style bow-water-gun with a backpack-sized water
reservoir. Tim Johnson (Dec. 1990), working for Raytheon in Wichita, came in
second with a waterpipe and a 2 liter soda bottle reservoir.
Chris May and family came the furthest from Germany. The reunion just happened to coincide with a month long trip to the US to visit his family. Others came from Las Vegas, NV, Wichita, KS, and near Midland, TX. The tentative dates for the next Class Reunion is Saturday and Sunday, July 1 and 2, 2000. We hope to see everyone there!
