Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Mexico

Mechanical Engineering Awards

Outstanding Graduate Student Award

Mehran Tehrani is a Mechanical Engineering PhD candidate working on characterization and modeling of materials at the nano-scale under supervision of Dr. Al-Haik. Mehran obtained his Masters in Mechanical Engineering here at the University of New Mexico and his bachelors of Science from The Sharif University of Technology, Iran’s #1 rated Engineering School.  Dr. Tehrani wanted me to thank Caleb Hanson, Scott Lovald and Daniel Garcia for easing his transition to American Culture in general and New Mexico in particular.

Outstanding Senior Award

James Colovos attended Cibola High School and decided to double major in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics because he loves gadgets; a good gadget increases the quality of life by inspiring awe or just making life easier.  James will be attending Stanford University this fall and will be joining their ME Department’s Mechanics and Computation Group.  James is becoming a mechanical engineer so he can contribute to these fields and create achievements of human intellect.

Tau Beta Phi Scholarship

Mechanical Engineer Casey Dyck has been awarded an 2009-10 Tau Beta
Pi Scholarship for his senior year.  This prestigious $2000 award
will help Casey complete his BSME degree.  Casey was a member of the
UNM Ski Team, placing 14th at the 2008 NCAA Cross Country
Championships.  He will serve as an assistant coach to the team while
completing his BSME degree in May 2010.

Tau Beta Pi is the world's largest engineering society.  Membership
represents the highest honor to be obtained by an engineering student
and is awarded on the basis of high scholarship and exemplary
character.  Tau Beta Pi Scholarships are awarded on a competitive
basis of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise
of future contributions to the engineering profession.

Outstanding Junior Award

Eric Flores attended Sandia High School here in Albuquerque NM  and decided to major in Mechanical Engineering because he enjoyed seeing how different things worked (and being good at math and physics didn’t hurt either).  After Eric graduates from UNM next year, he plans to attend graduate school, concentrating in either aeronautical or astronautical engineering.
