Is Mechanical Engineering for Me?

What makes a great mechanical engineer?

Mechanical Engineering students have a strong background in math, science and technology. In academic studies and personal life they demonstrate curiosity about how things work, pay attention to detail and have a strong capacity for synthesis and analysis. They enjoy a challenge and work well as a team to accomplish goals.

What can I do in Mechanical Engineering?

The UNM Mechanical Engineering department has programs in basic engineering, energy conversion, energy resources, environmental engineering, transportation, engineering and technology management, manufacturing, materials and structures, and systems and design. Our students have gone on to careers in business/industry, government and education.

What special programs and projects can I be involved in?

The department participates in several competitive engineering events including FSAE and Solar Splash. We also pair closely with national laboratories and businesses who work with our students on senior projects to produce marketable products and materials. In addition, there are internship opportunities with these entities.

What student organizations are available?
