Leveling (Make-up) Courses for Holders of Non-ME BS Degrees in other Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, or Math

Applications from individuals with a B.S. degree in other Engineering disciplines, Math, Computer Science, and Physical Sciences (such as Physics or Chemistry) are considered. To qualify for a graduate degree, applicants are expected to have at least an undergraduate-level exposure to most of the core ME disciplines.

The ME Department does not offer "provisional,” "probationary," or “conditional” admissions. For this reason, applicants who do not hold a BSME degree should complete the leveling courses before formally applying for the degree program. This can be accomplished while in graduate, non-degree status. The ME Graduate Director may be consulted to design a course plan. Once the individual has completed 12 credit hours of leveling course work under the non-degree status, he/she may be considered for regular admission to an ME graduate degree program. If the individual has fulfilled all other admission requirements and has received a minimum grade of B in all of these four (4) courses (i.e., a minimum GPA of 3.0 for these 12 credit hours), the ME Department will review his/her graduate application for regular admission.

  • CE 202 - Engineering Mechanics: Statics
  • CE 302 - Mechanics of Materials
  • CS 151 - Computer Programming Fundamentals (or equivalent)
  • ** Math 316 - Applied Ordinary Differential Equations
  • ME 301 - Engineering Thermodynamics (Classical Thermodynamics taught by Physics Dept. is not an acceptable substitute.)
  • ME 306 - Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics (Classical Mechanics taught by Physics Dept. is not an acceptable substitute.)
  • ME 317 (or CE 331) - Fluid Mechanics (May be waived for students who do not intend to pursue Energy/Thermo-Fluid areas upon approval of the student's advisor.)
  • ME 320 - Heat Transfer (May be waived for students who do not intend to pursue
  • Energy/Thermo-Fluid areas upon approval of the student's advisor.)
  • ME 357 - Vibrations (This subject will be required if the student intends to take ME 516 or ME 580 as a Core graduate course.)
  • E 370 (or CE 305) - Engineering Material Science (May be waived for students who do not intend to pursue Materials and Solid Mechanics areas upon approval of the student's advisor.)
  • ME 380 - Controls (This subject will be required if the student intends to take ME 580 or ME 581 as a Core graduate course.)

Notes:

  • Your academic advisor (or Committee-on-Studies) may require additional leveling courses.
  • Course descriptions and per-requisites are available in the UNM Catalog.
  • A grade of at least "B" will be required in all make-up courses.
  • None of the above-listed courses (except for Math 316) may be applied towards an ME graduate degree.
