Biography
Dr. Russell joined the School of Engineering in 1993 as the school’s director of research after a 27 year Air Force career. He then received tenure as a full professor in 2000 and became the associate dean for research. In 2004 he became interim chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Since then he has taught various courses and directed the Formula SAE program. The UNM program is now ranked as a top world and national program. His Air Force career was in R&D, where he was one of the developers of the AC-130 Gunship, taught at the USAF Academy, served as director of both the AF’s High Energy Laser Directorate and the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space and Missile Technology Directorate.
